ANTECEDENTES

CAM Cihuatlán opened its doors in August 1999, when 5 teachers were given the task of carrying out a census and collecting information about the number of children presenting disabilities, and at the same time invite them to form a group to receive attention.

The same teachers were also given the task to find a place to give classes, which was the Primary school Ignacio Manuel Altamirano, which loaned the use of its installations to help begin this project.

Later on the teachers were given the job of talking with the leaders of the local ejido, with the objective to procure a space on which to construct the school. They authorised the location where the school is currently located.

The numbers of teachers and students bit by bit grew, although a lot of students missed classes due to the lack of recourses to transport them daily to the school.

Thanks to promotion in the Cihuatlán community, they were invited to various cultural events to help promote and learn about the importance of special education. The event that gained the most attention was on the 2nd February 2003, when Centro de Atención Múltiple Cihuatlán participated in the inauguration of the Barra de Navidad Carnival and participated with a folk dance presentation. A group of foreigners were present and were interested in meeting the children and visiting the school and seeing the work being done. Through the director of the primary school, Prof. Jaime Sagún, they contacted us. The group who visited the school asked us many questions such as; what work is done here? What necessities does the school have? How can we help out with these necessities?.

After analysing the situation that the school was in (the majority of the students attending found themselves in economically margined groups), decided to incorporate us into their plans and help us.
